The title “architect” is protected by law. Any individual wishes to use the title “architect”, or use it in the name of a company must comply with Section 30 of the Architects Registration Ordinance (Cap. 408) (“ARO”).

HKIA recognises the equivalent professional degree courses in the mainland and overseas which are accredited by:
- The National Board of Architectural Accreditation (NBAA) of China
- The Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA)
- The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) of USA
- The Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA)
- The New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB)
